Morphed Morphology in Reflexives

Once you are convinced that something is right, it’s over! Why? Because you will glance over that mistake blinded to its erroneousness. But one day someone points it out to you, and you slap your forehead in disbelief trying to figure out how such a blatant fault eluded you.

 

One of these forehead-slapping moments is when you see that ‘theirselves’ is actually ‘themselves’. This error is a result of the assumption that reflexive pronouns are built by joining a possessive pronoun to the suffix -self or -selves. Although the pattern could construct a rule, it would be folklore grammar.
